The branch of medicine which is involved in the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders related to blood and blood-forming tissues is known as hematology. It encompasses a diverse range of conditions, which include both benign and malignant blood disorders. The diagnosis and management of these disorders involves a combination of clinical assessment, laboratory testing, and specialized procedures. Some of the diagnostic tools which are used to evaluate the composition, function, and structure of blood cells are complete blood counts (CBC), blood smears, bone marrow biopsies and genetic testing. These tests are used to identify abnormalities, determine the type and severity of the disorder, and guide appropriate treatment decisions. The disorders which are studied within this field can be broadly classified into three categories, namely, anemia, bleeding disorders, and blood cancers.
